The independent Ukrainian theatre GAS will present the monodrama “Sour and Sweet” on 30 and 31 July in Berlin. The performance is based on interviews with displaced residents of Kyslivka, a village in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine that was destroyed by the Russian army between 2022 and 2024. The aim of the piece is to preserve the memory of Kyslivka and to reflect on memory as an act of resistance and responsibility.
The production combines documentary material, devised theatre and physical theatre to explore the role of art in times of war, loss and displacement. It raises questions about how personal and collective memory is shaped, and how stories of destroyed places can be preserved for the future.
After the performance, the audience is invited to join Libereco in writing letters and postcards to Ukrainians held in Russian prisons and occupied territories.
The project is implemented by the NGO “Shtuka” with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Ukraine.
