In Belarus, too, hundreds of people are still in prison for political reasons. On 14 December, Mara, an organisation of Belarusians in the Netherlands, is staging a play about the experiences of children whose parents are in prison. “My Mother in Prison” is based on the book by Volha Vialichka, who collected the stories of the children of Belarusian political prisoners. It is not just an artistic interpretation, but an attempt to convey the living breath of children’s testimonies: the pain of loss, the expectation of a letter or a reunion, unfulfilled dreams and the unexpected maturity of these young characters.
The production features documentary footage, music, and children’s voices, and premiered in Vilnius in 2024, followed by three performances in Poland.
