Warmth for hospitals: Emergency aid during blackouts
For weeks, Russia has been deliberately attacking Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. Many people in Kyiv are left without heating in the middle of winter. To provide rapid assistance, LIBERECO has launched an emergency program: with your generous support, we supply hospitals with fuel—because your contribution brings warmth, enables treatment, and saves lives.
LIBERECO is responding with an emergency aid program to the unstable energy supply and simultaneous cold wave in Kyiv. In cooperation with other German NGOs, a total of 100 tons of wood, pellets, and other solid fuels were delivered to hospitals in the Ukrainian capital in January. Since January 25, trucks have been arriving daily to distribute the fuel to these facilities.
Over the past month, Russia has again significantly intensified its ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s civilian energy infrastructure. As a result, large parts of the population must endure severe subzero temperatures without heating and electricity—or with only very limited access to them. For patients, the cold can be life-threatening. Through our emergency assistance, we directly alleviate a humanitarian crisis and help hospitals continue operating.
How we help during winter
Our emergency aid complements our regular winter relief program, through which we support shelters, nursing homes, and private households every winter. With donated funds, we purchase solid fuels such as firewood and coal briquettes and deliver them directly to the affected homes and facilities. So far this winter, we have supplied 58 households with heating materials.
Older people requiring intensive care, internally displaced persons, and single parents face particular challenges in getting through the winter. That’s why our focus is on reaching the most vulnerable groups.
